The most enduring and symbolic Adrian College tradition originates from Adrian College’s early history – the passing of the Shepherd’s Crook. The graduating class presents the Shepherd’s Crook to the undergraduates as a symbol of achievement and a transfer of responsibility. Each graduating class attaches its colors to the cherished staff using ribbons that bear the names of every class member. This part of graduation is known as the Cane Ceremony.
From the long-standing tradition of the ribbons attached to the shepherd’s crook at graduation, these new ribbons of excellence have been developed to support the College’s mission statement. Just as the Latin inscription on the cane suggests, these ribbons of excellence cannot be achieved without hard work:
